What stands out is making the song yours and selling it as if you know it and its meaning like no one else. If you don't feel the emotion of the song when you sing it no one else will either. Taking something not original won't get you noticed. Being an amazing singer gets you noticed. Your voice is an instrument. Practice practice practice. Runs are good but can be detrimental if used too often. You want to almost make the listener want to hear you do a run. Pick the song that feels best to you. Without hearing your voice its difficult to find you a song. I don't know your vocal range so I don't know what you can make sound good. But I can personaly say that I like when a woman can take a well sung song that a mans done and make it sound good.
