Final Fantasy X weapon and armor assistance please?

So i am playing this game now, and so far i just got off the S.S liki boat i believe. Everytime i want to go equip a weapon it never tells me its strength or which one is better all it says is there abilities. Can someone please help me so i know when i equip something that its the best possible weapon or armor i have
